As Seen on Netflix: Maren Reviews , The Rocky Horror Picture Show, In a Day, and Ballerina

Have you seen Rocky Horror Picture Show? If so, can you please explain what was happening?  I know it has a big cult following, so there must be someone who can help me.  I was actually excited to watch it because I have seen it in pop culture for so long.  Because I knew that it had a cult following, I maybe had some expectations for it. Not really high expectations, but I thought it was something that had stood the test of time, so there must be something good about it. I was especially anxious to see the music in it. I like musicals, sometimes.

Well sadly, let’s just say that I did not get this movie on any level. I don’t say this often but I hated this movie. I can’t think of one thing I liked about it.  The music was surprisingly disappointing. Everything seemed random and pointless, like a whole bunch of ideas just thrown together. I am not sure at all what the plot was or why anything happens in the movie. Why is there a swimming pool in the middle of a random performance stage? Why does a guy in a wheel chair show up and have dinner with them?  Why the Frankenstein reference to make a dim witted Rocky? Why does a switch turn people into statues and why when they are reversed are they in transvestite clothing? What is the talk about aliens? Were they aliens? If so what is all the talk about Transylvania?  And who designed the worst looking laser gun I’ve ever seen in my life? Does anyone understand?

I had some hope that it would be kinda camp, but it didn’t come across that way to me. Instead, everything from the costumes and the sets, to the acting and music felt cheap, amateur and pointless. There was no camp charm to it.  I couldn’t figure out who I was suppose to like in this movie, none of the characters were like able or engaging. I could just keep going. There were just so many things to dislike.  And now I am seriously perplexed about why it has a cult following. I guess you have to be a Transexual Transvestite from Transylvania to get it.  If you are dying for an off beat, horror cult movie from the 70’s check out Rosemary’s Baby. It is a thousand times better and you don’t have to suffer through horrible music.

I also watched a movie called In a Day. Although I had a ton to say about Rocky Horror, I have surprisingly little to say about this movie.  It is a British movie and I adore British movies. Unfortunately it is kinda slow and there isn’t much point to it. I mean, I have sat through plenty of slow British movies and appreciated the pay off in the end, but this movie had no such pay off. I actually was quite frustrated with the ending. If you want to watch a movie about a single, struggling, musician girl who randomly has a day off work and then gets taken about town by a mysterious, generous, and random guy well then this is the movie for you. This British romantic comedy was pretty lacking in the comedy and felt off beat about the romance. But, at least I did get to listen to their accents for an hour and a half.

Lastly, I watched a documentary called Ballerina that follows some up and coming Russian dancers trying to become Prima Ballerinas. After recently watching Black Swan I was interested in seeing if real life ballet is as intense and crazy as it was depicted in that movie. Turns out, it’s even worse. To even have a chance at making it onto a Russian ballet troupe all of the girls start at age 10 at the premier ballet school in Russia called the . You should see the audition process. It’s insane.  Then they study ballet for 8-9 years in the hope that they are among the one of two girls chosen to join the ballet.  Seriously. This documentary was very interesting to see a glimpse into their lives. I say, it was worth watching.
